Meet Abygail Hernandez
NYC Middle School Program Associate, New York City | ahernandez@yesscholars.org
Abby Hernandez joined the YES team in January 2023. She grew up in Long Beach, California and attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she studied and obtained her BS in Mathematics, with an emphasis on Education, having the privilege to be the first one in her family to receive a college education. During her time at the university, she worked with numerous organizations, including the AVID college and career readiness program, UCLA Cal Teach, and BruinCorps where she was committed to providing academic support to students in disinvested communities. Upon graduation, she joined Teach for America in New York as an eighth-grade middle school math educator at Van Siclen Community School. There, Abby contributed to the design and development of curriculum, developed custom-made templates using advanced web applications, facilitated an after-school intervention program, and founded the VSC Boutique, where girls can enhance their wardrobe with donations given from their community.
Simultaneously, she worked remotely as a mathematics tutor for Tutor Doctor, Santa Monica, and Wyzant where she successfully generated a 45% increase in students’ mastery levels by optimizing a wide range of instructional approaches and constructing self-made lesson plans. Currently, she is working towards receiving her certification in UX/UI Design in order to create accessible digital tools for students and educators.
Abby is thrilled to bring her passion for education, mathematical knowledge, and digital expertise to the YES program.
